Metal Cubed: bringing bare metal automation to Kubernetes
Metal3 is a CNCF project providing Kubernetes API for managing bare metal machines, as well as a cluster API implementation to install clusters on them. At the heart of it lies Ironic: an OpenStack project dedicated to bare metal management. In the first part I will describe the Ironic project, its goals, design architecture and main features. You will learn how it changed the purely virtual world of OpenStack to fully embrace bare metal machine management. The second part will cover how Ironic has grown beyond just OpenStack: from Bifrost – standalone hardware management project based on Ansible, to Metal3. I will explain how Metal3 adds bare metal management capabilities to Kubernetes and enables self-managing on-premise Kubernetes clusters.
